What model numbers are included in the recall?

GE will notify owners of natural gas units to provide a free repair for any consumers who converted their Rangetop with Grill to LP gas.

What is the issue that prompted the recall?
In Rangetops with Grills operating on liquefied petroleum ("LP" or propane) gas, if one of the top burner gas control knobs is inadvertently left in a position between OFF and LITE, the burner may fail to light, posing a risk of delayed ignition or explosion. As part of its commitment to product quality and safety, GE is voluntarily recalling the affected Rangetops to provide a repair at no cost to consumers.

What do you mean when you say explode or explosion?
Propane/LP is heavier than natural gas. If the burner is inadvertently left in a position between OFF and LITE, the propane/LP can settle or accumulate in the base under the Rangetop. When the Rangetop is lit, the gas inside the product can combust/explode

What is the difference between a Rangetop and a cooktop?
A Rangetop is a specific style of cooking product in the professional-style Monogram line. A Rangetop is a unique product and installation, and the 36- or 48-inch wide units are stainless steel and sit in the counter with the controls/knobs on the front face. Cooktops are dropped in the countertop with controls on the top surface. Cooktops are not included in this recall.

How many units are included in the recall?
About 470 LP units

Can consumers continue to use their Rangetops?
No. Consumers who are operating the product on LP (propane) gas should stop using the product immediately, turn off the gas supply to the product, and contact GE to schedule a free repair.

How can a consumer tell if their Rangetop is one of the affected models?
The recall involves Monogram® Professional Rangetops with Grill manufactured from May 2008 through June 2011. Serial and model numbers are located on a label located behind the far left burner knob. A complete list of the affected models and serials and a picture that shows you where to find the model and serial number of your Rangetop can be found on the GE Recall website, www.geappliances.com/ge/recall/.

What should a consumer do if she/he has a recalled Rangetop?
GE is proactively contacting as many customers as possible to schedule a free repair. In the meantime, consumers with affected Rangetops should contact GE’s Recall Hotline toll-free at 866-645-3956 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday to arrange for a free service call. Are any of these recalled Rangetops currently being made?
No. The Monogram® Professional Rangetops with Grill were manufactured from May 2008 through June 2011.

How many incidents is GE aware of? Have there been any injuries?
GE has received six reports involving an explosion while operating on LP gas, including reports of property damage to the product and kitchen cabinets beneath the Rangetop. No fire damage or injuries have been reported.

What will GE do to repair my Rangetop?
GE-authorized service technicians have been trained to make the repair. Technicians will replace the gas valve assemblies, to ensure the surface burners light properly. GE's repair plan has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

I have a Rangetop operating on natural gas; does my unit require a repair?
No. Only Rangetops operating on LP gas require a repair. Natural gas is lighter than air, and will not accumulate in the base of the Rangetop, like propane. GE has received no reports of incidents in Rangetops operating on natural gas. GE is notifying consumers who initially purchased natural gas units to provide a free repair for any consumers who later converted their Rangetop to operate using LP gas.

How do I know if my natural gas unit was converted to operate on LP gas?
If you have LP gas, you will have an LP tank outside your home. During installation, if you had your Rangetop converted to operate on LP gas, the installer was required to fill out a label and attach it to the bottom of the product near the rating label. You can look for this label to see if your Rangetop has been converted to LP gas. Consumers who are unsure of whether the product is operating on LP gas should contact GE's recall hotline for additional information.

Can I repair the Rangetop myself, or can I take it to a dealer for repair?
No. Only qualified service technicians can make the repair.

What if a consumer had a service contract on their Rangetop?
All Rangetops included in the recall will be repaired at no charge regardless of a service contract.

How much will the repair cost consumers?
GE will repair the Rangetops at no charge to consumers.

Were these Rangetops sold in Canada?
Yes. A small number of Rangetops were also sold in Canada. If you think that your Canadian Rangetop may be included in this recall, please call 1-855-307-0070.
